Day two

Vick and I took Gary to see the Capitol.

I think he enjoyed it since he was smiling the entire time and wanted to be in every photo.  I did get an odd comment from the security guard at the George Washington Monument, “Is this your stuffed animal?”.  Looking at a grown man with a plush toy that looks like a furry John McEnroe wearing a headband!! That’s ok, I’m old enough to not get embarrassed easily.

We visited lots of war memorials.  I thought of my Dad when visiting the Korean War Memorial, which I found to be the most profound with the field of soldier statues.  Vick was clever enough to book tickets for the Washington Monument so we were able to go to the top but the views were not great because of the smoke from the wildfires in Canada drifting down this way.

The last time I saw the reflection pool it was empty for cleaning, this time it was lovely, but we could only get so close because they are getting ready for fireworks for the 4th of July and it was all fenced off.

Some stats for the nerds…we walked 19,000 steps today and yes we are playing the license plate game and out of the 50 states we have seen 31 including ALASKA!!!Score!

The Cherry Hill Campground has great amenities including a pool so we came back and had a swim after all the walking in the heat. The only downside is the tent camping site is the closest to an enormously noisy highway so the noise cancelling headphones will be going on tonight.

  1. Lovely pictures but sad about all the smoke. Thanks for including California. One of these days I’ll get to DC.
